We’ll See You at Beer City Code
Team BizStream is looking forward to Beer City Code and we have many reasons why! First off, let me tell you what Beer City Code is. Beer City Code, formerly known as GR DevDay, is an annual software development conference held in Grand Rapids, MI. This year’s conference is held June 22-23 at Calvin College. The main conference is held Saturday, June 23, with an optional day-long workshops the day before, Friday, June 22.

BEER CITY USA

So, why the name change? Well, last year, in 2017, the organizers decided to highlight one of the coolest things about Grand Rapids, MI! Aside from a flourishing tech industry, Grand Rapids is also known for our craft beer scene.

Here’s a little history for you non-GrandRapidians; In 2012 we were named Beer City USA for the first time. When Grand Rapids was named as Beer City USA again in 2013, the city enjoyed 17 breweries. Currently, there are approximately 37 breweries and brewpubs in the immediate city and 80 throughout West Michigan!

If you’re a visitor to Grand Rapids we highly suggest taking some time to check out some of our Grand Rapids breweries, you won’t be disappointed! You can read more about Grand Rapids’ rise in the beer scene here.

ABOUT THE SESSIONS

I could talk about beer all day, but back I’ll get back to the conference.

This conference is known for attracting a ton of local talent and knowledgeable speakers from across the nation. Sessions cater to all skill levels, ensuring attendees will walk away with valuable information, regardless of their experience level. Year after year BizStream team members have taken away valuable information that help to improve ourselves both individually and as a team.

This year’s keynote speaker is Douglas Crockford. Over the years, Crockford worked for Atari, National Semiconductor, Lucasfilm, Yahoo, and PayPal. He’s played a major role in the development of the JavaScript language, popularized the JSON format, and created both of the popular JSLint and JSMin tools. He’s even written a book, JavaScript: The Good Parts!

BizStream's co-owner, Brian McKeiver, will be kicking off the Saturday conference with the opening address and our very own developer, Jordan Whiteley, will be presenting, Pragmatic Functional Programming in C#. Jordan is a believer that functional programming is new and fun, but he also realizes when it's time to get to work it can be an overly complex mess. Jordan will go over real-world examples of making your code better with first-class functions, closures, currying, function composition, and LINQ. You can catch Jordan’s session in Room 115 from 10:00 AM - 10:50.

Visit the Beer City Code page for a complete list of speakers and sessions.

BizStream Team, Beer City Code, 2017

WHY WE DIG IT

BizStream continues to sponsor Beer City Code because we enjoy having a strong presence in the local tech community, staying up to date on the latest development trends, and building relationships with local members of the technology industry. Beer City Code is a perfect event to be involved in because it allows us to learn first-hand from our friends in the industry and share our own expertise as well. We enjoy connecting with people new to the tech scene and catching up with familiar faces.

Attending Beer City Code gives us exposure within the community and sponsoring this event gives us the opportunity to talk about what makes BizStream unique! BizStream is an amazing place to work, and that’s not just because of the foosball, backpacking trips, or weekly catered lunches. We are a team that is passionate about what we do; build cool shit, with cool people, and have a positive impact on others.

BizStream is always looking for talented developers to join our team, people who are just as passionate as we are and who are willing to do “whatever it takes”. Conferences like this provide a great platform for BizStream to highlight our culture, our “work hard, play hard” philosophy, and to get skilled developers excited about the opportunity to become the newest BizStream team member!
