Five Reasons to Challenge Yourself

On June 3rd, 2017, nine members of team BizStream will be electrocuted.

Each team member will run through a 50 ft stretch of dangling live wires that will send 10,000 volts of electricity coursing through their bodies. Now before you call the silent observer and report mistreatment in the workplace, you should know that everyone on this team signed up for this.

It’s called Tough Mudder. Developed by US Special forces, this 10 mile, 25 obstacle nightmare pits team members against the elements in an all out race that tests physical, emotional and mental stability to the core.

Here are a few of the challenging obstacles team BizStream will be tackling:

The Block Ness Monster: Participants have to help one another push, pull and roll their way through 60ft of slick, rotating barriers in frigid ice water.

Arctic Enema 2.0: An icy plunge! Scale a center wall and plunge beneath multiple barriers as you escape over 10 tons of ice jammed into a frigid dumpster dive.

Everest 2.0: A slicked out, greased up quarter pipe at just over 15’ tall with a recurved top to make it incredibly difficult to get a handold. Aim for the top, but there’s no guarantee you won’t end up at the bottom.

Electroshock Therapy: The last thing standing between you and that cold finisher beer is just a short muddy sprint. It couldn’t be that bad right? Let’s up the game. This stretch includes a field of dangling wires that deliver a whopping 10,000 volt punch to the body!

Sounds challenging right? We thought so. That’s why we are doing it.

If you ever get a chance to visit BizStream, you may notice the many motivational messages up on our walls. Here’s one of them:

It may sound like a recycled mantra. Go head, roll your eyes, we understand. But at BizStream, we truly do take to heart the philosophy that challenging yourself is a necessity to your very existence. I’m talking about the gut-wrenching, heart pounding, “what was I thinking?” kind of challenge. Here are five reasons why challenging yourself is so crucial.

1. Distrupt the Satus Quo

Studies have shown that one of the primary causes of alzheimer's and early onset dementia correlates with the level of cognitive activity we induce on our brain every day. When we fall into our daily routines, our brain, much like any of our muscles in the body, will begin to atrophy. Deviating from the day to day routine, picking up a new skill or learning something out of the norm is a great way to stretch your brain and keep it firing! Challenging these regulated neural pathways promotes an incredibly strong and healthy functionality of the brain.

2. Shape Your Ever-Expanding Identity

“We are what we do”, according to Aristotle. You are never too far along in life to learn something new or to better your craft. At BizStream, our developers constantly push to keep up on industry trends and stay sharp on the latest coding best practices. It helps make them better developers and it adds intrinsic value to our team.  If you want to continue to strive for improvement in your own life you could go take a class or learn a new coding/spoken/sign language.

3. Just Do It

Nike had something right with their slogan: Just Do It. This summer, I renovated a 5,400 sqft Veterans of Foreign War hall and turned it into a secondary business of mine to host wedding receptions. It was the hardest project I have ever undertaken. I am not a handyman. Up until a year ago, I did not own a power saw; or any saw for that matter.  It was a crash course for me and, at times, I felt overwhelmed. However, I had this dream of mine in my head for years. No amount of planning could have prepared me for the journey, but at the end of the day I had to take a leap and JUST DO IT. It was the best decision of my life. I learned more about carpentry, masonry, electrical and plumbing than I ever could have imagined. Now when my wife asks me to fix a faucet or knock out a wall at home, BRING IT ON.

4. Phenomenal Cosmic Power

When I finished the Tough Mudder two years ago, I was on fire for weeks after the event. When the renovation on my business was complete, I felt unstoppable. Friends and family told me I had looked the happiest I had been in a while. People asked how I had so much energy after working 8 hours at BizStream and pulling another 6 at my second business. Challenging yourself ignites an inner fire that you may not even know exists. Something about working while everyone is sleeping (in moderation of course) makes you feel like a total badass. You want to be the most energetic, passionate, and powerful YOU that you can be? Grab a hold of that challenge and don’t let it go.

5. Why Not?

We are creatures of habit. It’s easy to get cozy and even a tad lethargic.

One time I went to an all-inclusive resort. The first two days of drinking daiquiris and lying out in the sun was great. By day three, I couldn’t sit still. It may sound like paradise to you now, but if you sit back and walk your mind through that experience; doing that every single day would be boring. It took me a lot of prodding to get out of that complacency in my own personal life. When I finally started really challenging myself, I looked back on all of that wasted time and asked myself why I didn’t do it sooner.  Now I come home after a busy day at BizStream and proceed to dive into my other business responsibilities.  It’s a challenge, but it truly really enhances my life with an amplified sense of purpose.

So maybe you want to run a Tough Mudder, learn a new language or jump out of a plane. Maybe you want to better yourself physically, emotionally or spiritually. Whatever it takes in your own life, make it happen. Continue to shape your ever-expanding identity. Get out and just do it. Find that phenomenal cosmic power...because why not?
